5 ways to ‘liven up’ your water in the morning

Most people could use a bit of a jump start in the morning, and the common fix for this is coffee. However, when you have been presumably fasting from bedtime to waking up, the hit of a highly acidic and caffeinated beverage to your digestive system and body first thing is akin to your loved one slapping you in the face to wake you up. In other words, it’s not really appreciated.

The purpose of breakfast is to “break the fast,” which should be done relatively gently before you introduce any other caffeinated beverages or heavy foods to your body. Water is a great way to accomplish this, but since that can sometimes feel pretty vanilla compared to the caffeine injection, here are five ways to add some power (and flavor) to it in the morning.

Citrus

A common morning routine for health conscious folks is to take a glass of water and add a squeeze of lemon to it. This is a great idea (presuming the water is properly filtered or otherwise clean), as the gentle hydration of the water with a bit of sour to nudge the liver is a nice combo to wake up your systems and vital organs.

But why stop there? There are plenty of citrus fruits that could do the same, which you could slice up and put in a pitcher the night before to drink all during the day, or to simply squeeze into your water as well. Think pink grapefruit, lime, and oranges too, and mix them up if you want to give your morning water ritual a tropical feel.

Schizandra

Schizandra will definitely put some zip in your step, with it’s curious and complex flavor profile as well as it’s support of the digestive, liver, and adrenal functions. There’s not much this powerful herb can’t do, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has known this for thousands of years.

As an added bonus it also supports mental function, energy production, physical performance, and libido, so make sure you add a teaspoon to your water, shoot it back, and get ready for it’s power to shift you in the right direction for the day.

Try the Health Ranger’s 100% Organic Freeze Dried Schizandra powder for maximum effectiveness.

Algae

Admittedly, this is only for hard core health enthusiasts, who care more about how they feel every day, than how good something tastes. Although algae often goes in smoothies, it can often ruin the taste due to the lack of synergy with other ingredients, so if you like your algae benefits, consider putting a teaspoon of chlorella or spirulina in your water and shooting it back for an immediate wake up effect (it seems to work faster and better than tablets).

With an algae like chlorella being rich in highly digestible protein (58 percent of weight), essential fatty acids, various vitamins and minerals, and chlorophyll (to name a few), it will provide a nice kickstart to your digestion, liver, energy, and brain. That’s how you start a morning!

Camu camu

Camu camu is a berry grown deep in the Amazon rainforests and has been labeled a “powerfruit” due to its extremely high nutrient content, most notably vitamin C. In a 100 gram serving it has been shown to have 7.5 grams of vitamin C, an unprecedented 7.5 percent of its weight! To compare, it has 60 times more vitamin C than an orange on an ounce by ounce basis.

The beauty of camu camu is that it comes in a powder form, and it’s tangy and refreshing antioxidant zip is a perfect morning pick-me-up that will support your digestive, immune, and nervous systems, as well as enhance your mood and cognitive balance. Just add a teaspoon to as cup of water and revel in the results!

Concentrated mineral and electrolyte drops

If your morning water has been sourced from a clean spring, then you should have no problem getting various minerals and electrolytes. However, if you’re not fortunate enough to have that access, then giving your water a shot of both is an excellent idea.

Since nearly everyone has some type of mineral deficiency, and they are required for everything from healthy bones and teeth to glowing skin and hair, getting a concentrated shot in your water is sure to give you a little boost and long term protection against various health concerns.

As for electrolytes, they help balance your body and promote deeper hydration, as well as enhance mental focus and sustain energy levels. That’s a perfect start to a day!

Of course, there are many other ways to start your day, including drinking this Total Body Tonic. What you need to remember is how you start your day will often determine how you end your day. So get off on the right foot and start your day with a healthy boost, so you can end it with a good night’s sleep as well!
